POLARITY BALANCING Polarity Therapy is a natural system that seeks to balance the body's life energy. This complete, holistic method of health care combines diet, exercise, practitioner touch, and self-awareness to provide a simple, comprehensive method for health maintenance. The principles of Polarity Therapy were developed by Randolph Stone, D.C., D.O., N.D. (1890-1982) who had doctoral degrees in Chiropractic, Osteopathy, and Naturopathy. Dr Stone blended Eastern and Western aspects of healing to create Polarity Therapy. He traveled extensively to study the traditional healing systems of other cultures; from China and Japan came Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, and Shiatsu; the Hermetic and cabalistic systems came from the Middle East; and the principles of Ayurveda and Yoga came from India. In 1948, he outlined the basic principles of his new system in a privately published book titled Energy: The Vital Principle in the Healing Art. He continued to develop the principles of Polarity Therapy and taught it to other health practitioners while maintaining a private practice. The Polarity System of energy balancing asserts that energy fields and currents exist everywhere in nature, and that the free flow and balance of this energy in the human body is the underlying foundation of good health. This life force or energy (called Chi in China and Japan and prana in India) is either positive (+), negative (-), or neutral (0). Energy is not considered to be good or bad; what matters is whether it is blocked or free flowing in the body. Dr. Stone taught that body, mind, emotions, and spirit are all interdependent, and each person is responsible for his own health. The practitioner and patient work together in a healing relationship to address problems caused by energy blockages in the body/mind. In Polarity bodywork, the practitioners hands are used for a variety of touching movements or contacts on the patient's body. This is nonmanipulative bodywork in the sense that it does not work on connective tissue, muscle, or bones. The practitioner places her hands on two designated points (energy centers), one charged positive and the other charged negative, on the patient's body. The practitioner's hands are also charged, the right being positive and the left being negative. The positive hand is placed on the patient's negative body point and vice versa. The practitioner's hand do not give energy, they merely redirect the flow of the patient's own energy. The patient then recharges herself with her own freed energy. When the energy is balanced between the positive and negative poles (points or locations on the body), the neutral principle is manifested. In this neutral state energy between two points is balanced and recharged, allowing the free flow to be reestablished. This results in harmony and is experienced by the individual as health and well-being. A short term diet is used for internal cleansing or purification, and a long-term diet for maintenance that leads to optimal well-being. Exercise utilizes polarity Yoga in a series of simple self-help techniques that create relaxation and balance. Most Polarity Therapy is practiced by massage therapists and chiropractors. Using it in conjunction with Reiki methods is also positive. Like laying on of stones and Reiki, Polarity Balancing is based on the structure of the aura, on the way the energy flow through the aura and four bodies. The body is a free-flowing energy map. There are several different Polarity Balancing "holds", many of them similar to the Reiki positions. It is also interesting to note that those who are not attuned to Reiki often feel drained after a Polarity Balancing session. One should always be balanced and grounded before performing Polarity Balancing, or any other energy work. Try running your hands under cool tap water or placing them directly on the earth for a few moments. Let your intuition tell you when you are grounded. The patient lies fully clothed on a massage table or the floor. The first position is called the Cradle Hold and is similar to the Reiki second position. All of the positions should be held as long as the energy is felt flowing. After all of the centers/chakras are balanced (again, use your intuition to tell you when it is time to stop) the patient's aura should be swept with palms facing and sweeping away fom the body. Shake your hands briskly at the end of each sweep if the energy feel "clingy". Again, you should clear your hands of energy by grounding them. Allow your patient to rest as long as she needs to afterwards.
